In den USA ist Larry McMurty den Büchermenschen als Büchermensch kein Unbekannter. Nicht nur nennt er eine Privatbibliothek mit 28.000 Bänden sein eigen, als Antiquar waren ihm sogar 400.000 Bücher zur Verfügung gestanden. 300.000 davon bot er in einer großen Auktion an, über die er im Blog der New York Review of Books berichtet: The Last Book Sale:

Everything sold but the fiction. Everyone who deals in fiction has plenty, and more is spilling onto the market from the sale of the Serendipity Books stock now being dispersed on the West Coast. Many people asked me if I was sad to see so many books go. I wasn’t—mainly I was irritated to discover that I still had 30,000 novels to sell.
